Carlisle is the county seat of Cumberland County, which consists of 555 square miles of both urban and rural areas. The county contains nine school districts, eight public libraries, and two hospitals, as well as two military installations: the US Army War College in Carlisle, and the Naval Support Station in Mechanicsburg, all of which contribute to the fact that Cumberland County consistently has one of the lowest unemployment rates in Pennsylvania. Cumberland County is within a two hour drive of Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC, as well as within a ten hour drive of over 50% of the United States population.
